How To Treat Chapped Lips

Beauty Tips

kiehls lip balm main How To Treat Chapped LipsIt’s normal for your lips to get flaky in dry winter weather. Here are a few tips from Kansas City, Missouri dermatologist Audrey Kunin for dealing with a chapped mouth:

  1. Choose the right balm. You want one that’s viscous, not waxy, to really get into the cracks, and you’ll need a formula with moisture-restoring ingredients like petrolatum, shea butter, hyaluronic acid, or dimethicone. (We like the petrolatum-rich Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1.)
  2. Think beyond your lips. Disrupting the pH balance in your mouth can also cause chapping. Toothpastes, mouthwashes, and facial cleansers can all mess with your pH, but applying balm right after brushing your teeth or washing your face can help. If the chapping doesn’t stop, consider switching to Squigle, a sodium-laurel-sulfate-free toothpaste that may help.
  3. Get rid of flakes. If you exfoliate, do it right: Avoid grainy scrubs or washcloths, and instead, try a lip balm with a little bit of alpha hydroxy acid, like EI Solutions Lip Refine.

Madame Alexander Meets Modern Fashion

Beauty Tips

L'Enfant-Terrible_main.jpgMy great-grandmother worked in the factory that made Madame Alexander dolls, which meant that my grandmother had an extensive collection. They looked like, well, classic porcelain dolls, so they didn’t really spark my interest as a little girl. And while the newer versions have gotten updated hair and decade-appropriate clothes over the years, their most recent makeover made me do a double take. Jason Wu, who became a household name soon after Michelle Obama began wearing his creations, worked on six of the company’s Cissy dolls, putting a ’50s-glam spin on three of them and creating three NEOCissy dolls in futuristic clothes. My favorite is one of the latter: L’Enfant Terrible (shown above). The eye patch is way more Lady Gaga than I’d ever expect from Madame Alexander.
