When crafting the makeup look for Erin Fetherston’s spring 2010 show, Lucia Pica was inspired by Helmut Newton's photographs: “It’s a Newton woman in soft focus,” says Pica, who—after dusting eyelids with brown shadow and rimming eyes with M.A.C Teddy and Coffee liners—smudged makeup toward the outer corners for a blurred effect. To further soften the bold look, she created “a light halo” around eyes using peachy bronzer on upper cheekbones, and kept lips nude (concealer was applied on the edges so that puckers became less defined and eyes stood out).

Nail Trends Spring 2010: Shades of Brown

Brown lipstick is in for spring—and so is brown nail polish. With soft undertones of mauve, gold, and gray, muddy lacquers made their debut on the spring 2010 runways of Malandrino and Chanel. While Malandrino featured sandblasted manis— CND Desert Suede was roughed up with coffee grounds and sugar for a textured effect—Chanel debuted Particulière, a new slate-tinged taupe. “It’s very pure, fresh, and optimistic with a slight touch of rebellion,” says Peter Philips, global creative director of Chanel Makeup, about the polish. Philips says he chose the “incredibly sophisticated color” because it complements the beige palette of the house’s spring collection.

According to Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, cofounder of O.P.I., this season’s browns look every bit as polished off the runway as on: “They’re the new neutral, and they look great against any skin tone.” Weiss-Fischmann recommends going with short nails for a “chic and modern” look versus an outdated one. She also suggests pairing brown shades with gold jewelry to give it an extra kick. Her go-to chocolate hue? O.P.I. Chop-Sticking to My Story. “I wear it with a big gold ring and bangles,” she says.

Brown Lipstick Is Back: Will You Wear It?

If, when you think of brown lipstick, visions of Drew Barrymore and Courtney Love in the 1990s come to mind, think again. “Back then, the trend was heavy and matte,” says makeup artist Matin. “Now, there are more textures available—you can wear a sheer, glossy brown that looks more natural.”

Matin says cool browns are most flattering: “Warm browns—like orange or brick tinted ones—look beautiful on some girls, but if you don’t have white teeth they can be detrimental to your smile.”

Instead, makeup artist Gucci Westman says to go for a mauve-tinted brown. “There’s a bluish purple undertone to it,” says the Revlon global artistic director, who applied Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Chocolate Velvet on models at Richard Chai’s spring 2010 show. “I always love how it looks, and it works with just about every skin tone.”
