“It’s all based on childlike innocence—it’s as if a child got hold of a crayon and colored under their eyes with it,” says makeup artist Polly Osmond about the bright-eyed look she created for Nanette Lepore’s spring 2010 show. “Using the blue, I went right underneath the eye and on the inside rim as well. It’s a bit smudgy.”

To complement the bold turquoise eyeliner, Osmond chose an equally striking color for the lips and cheeks: orange. “During the makeup test with Nanette, there was a thank-you card hanging on her wall—on it was a drawing of a '60s-style model with huge blue-lined eyes, orange cheeks, and orange lips,” says Osmond about her inspiration for the color palette. Calling orange lipstick “a great alternative to red,” Osmond used M.A.C Lipstick in So Chaud (a reddish-brown orange) on models with darker skin tones and M.A.C Morange (a cool, bluish mandarin) on those with lighter complexions.

And now, it seems her look had even more going for it than previously thought. The New York Times reported on a study published this month in Analytical Chemistry: researchers analyzed ancient Egyptian makeup samples preserved at the Louvre. They discovered that the lead-based eyeliner actually boosted the immune system and killed bacteria from airborne particles that could lead to serious eye infections and permanent damage. Despite the findings, scientists caution this is not a justification to add such toxic lead levels to modern-day makeup. While the eyeliner may have inadvertently helped the Egyptians, modern science and technology provide other ways to protect eyes.
