APPLYING MAKEUP

How is the lighting where you apply your makeup? Are you applying your makeup in a bathroom or bedroom with one bright light above your head? Is that one overhead light casting some pretty bad shadows on your facial features, making it difficult for you to judge how much color to apply to your eyes, lips and cheeks?

Understanding proper lighting and using that lighting while applying your makeup makes a big difference in how your makeup looks. The better your face is lit, the more even your makeup application will be, helping you to achieve a pretty and natural finish. Beware if you are applying your makeup in a dimly-lit room - it is easy to overdo your application.

So when possible try to apply your makeup in a well-lit area. It is very helpful to be by a window for natural light. Natural daylight is the very best light for checking your makeup blending skills and intensity of the colors you've applied. In natural daylight, it is easy to see if you need to add color in some areas or tone down the amount of color in other areas. You can check your makeup application by looking in a mirror either next to a window or by going outside. "I have had to prepare many poorly-lit areas for makeup application in my 18+ years as a makeup artist, even removing lamp shades to get better lighting on the face of my subject! And no matter what the lighting was on-set, when possible I almost always took my subject outside to check his or his makeup in natural daylight," says Jennifer Kalman, Commercial Makeup Artist and Founder of www.QDazzleProm.com. If your makeup application looks great in natural daylight, it will look great in most other settings, even in fluorescent office lights or soft evening lights.

Once you've settled yourself near a good light for applying your makeup, here's another helpful tip. For best results during your makeup application, while holding your mirror to apply your makeup be sure to turn your face (and mirror) up toward the light source, whether your light source is a lightbulb or the the natural daylight outside a window. By doing this, you can achieve an even coverage of light on your face while you apply your makeup so that no shadows will distort the amount of color you apply. For example when applying blusher, if one side of your face is in a shadow and one side of your face is in the light, you might be tempted to apply more blush on the side in the shadow because there is little light on that side of your face and you're unable to clearly see the amount of color you have already applied.

Of course, sometimes it is not possible to apply or at least check your makeup in natural daylight. In these cases, try to find the brightest indoor lighting possible. Then use the above tip of turning your face and mirror toward the light source so that there are no shadows on your face while you apply your makeup.

When you're aware of the lighting around you before applying your makeup, you will have the best results with your makeup application.

Eye makeup is one of the last few steps involved in the makeup application routine. It is a step that completes the makeup preparation, for often a little foundation and eye makeup is all you would need to pull of a glamorous and exciting look. It is the eye makeup routine of the entire makeup application process that really brings out the beauty of the makeup, also could make the difference between a natural look, an exotic look, or a demure but sexy look. Eye makeup comprises of all the makeup and makeup accessories that you would use to decorate or highlight your eyes.

Eye Makeup Tips

Before you learn how to apply makeup, you need to know what kind of makeup you're applying. There's makeup for the face, eyes, eyebrows and lips. You certainly don't have to use makeup on all of your facial features, but you can. If you decide to use facial makeup, or concealer, make sure to get a concealer shade that matches your face. If you're concealer is too dark or too pale, it will stand out. If you have nice skin, you can bypass concealer or, you can apply it to areas that contain blemishes.

Formal eye makeup tips will allow you to look glamorous no matter if you are heading out for the biggest night of your life or if you are just hanging out with friends. To look glamorous, you need to know just how to apply makeup correctly, to achieve the desired, finished look. Learning how to put on eye makeup does not have to be a difficult process either. Here are several key steps to make your wedding or prom pictures truly amazing.

Use your fingers for working the foundation on one area of your face. It is better if you are moving your fingers in circular motion, and after you have finished this finger-walk, you can use sponge for the final working of the foundation.

Techniques of Eye Makeup

It doesn't matter the size or shape your eyes, with the proper makeup techniques you can change the shape of your eyes. You can make your eyes appear bigger, wider and even more dramatic with these simple easy tips.Do you have small eyes? Use pale color up to the crease, contour crease with a dark, smoky color, smudging often.

Apply your foundation first over your entire face before you start on your eye makeup. You need a good canvas to work with.

Choose an eyelid sparkler in soft, metallic cream and dab a smidgen of it on your lids. Then sweep a pressed powder eye shadow in metallic copper also on your lids to add a dark, sexy glaze. Use a clear mascara to lengthen your lashes. You want to keep the attention to your eyes, so a touch of champagne gold lipstick will be enough to complete the look.

Apply an eye shadow primer from lash to brow to make your eye makeup last. You can skip this step if you prefer. Using a makeup brush or eye shadow sponge, apply the medium shade from lashes to the crease of your eyelid.

Â

Halal in this instance means makeup that's free of animal and alcohol content and that wasn't tested on animals. The founder of the brand, Samina Akhter, created it after finding a void in the market for Muslim women who wanted to look good but not use products with ingredients not endorsed by their religion. It's not sold in the U.S. yet, but we wonder if it will make its way here. Until then, we'll stay tuned, keeping in mind that there are Muslim skeptics in Great Britain who think the use of the word "halal" is a marketing gimmick.

If you are typically in a hurry each morning, finding time to put on makeup can be a challenge. It is easy to look glamorous when you have all the time in the world and a makeup assistant to follow you around, but most people usually only have about a 5-10 minute makeup routine. If you do not have time to put on your makeup the right way, these makeup suggestions can have you looking great in almost no time at all.

Quick Makeup Suggestion #1

Makeup looks its best on clean, clear skin. If you have to cut corners somewhere to make enough time for your makeup, cut it anywhere but your skin cleaning routine. Cleaning, exfoliating and moisturizing your face on a regular basis are absolutely necessary. Always apply makeup to clean, unbroken skin and never go to bed without removing it.

Quick Makeup Suggestions #2

The most important tool that you can have for quick makeup looks is a great makeup brush. The soft, loose bristles give you great coverage with just a little product. It is especially important when you are using powder blushes and mineral foundations.

Quick Makeup for Busy Mornings

Need to look great in just a couple of minutes? This natural makeup routine is quick enough to help you look great in no more than five minutes. It is a great quick makeup routine for car pool mornings and getting out the door to work.

Apply your favorite moisturizer to your clean, dry face. Next, use your fingertips to smooth and then pat your skin lightly with a tissue or makeup pad. That gives you a base for any foundation – or none at all.

Smooth a concealer over problem spots with your fingertips. Blend it with light strokes. For extra protection, choose an under-eye concealer with moisturizer or an age-fighting concealer for those dark circles under your eyes. You can never moisturize enough there. You can also minimize damage to that delicate skin by using a natural mineral concealer that also contains SPF-15 sunscreen.

Using a soft makeup brush, lightly dust your entire face with powdered foundation or sheer mineral makeup. Use a feathery touch. There is no need to cake the makeup on. Be sure that you have chosen a shade that is compatible with your skin color to keep that natural look.

Tap off your brush or use another brush to feather a quick hint of blush over your cheekbones. Start just about the center of your eyes when you are looking straight ahead and feather out toward your temples. Stick with a pale peach or pink color to let your healthy skin glow.

Give your eyes some sparkle with this quick makeup hint. Pick a light eye shadow or eye shadow cream. Using your fingertip, smooth a tiny bit of color under your brow from the arch outward, then lightly dab at the center of your eyelid just above the lashes. With an eye pencil and a light hand, line the upper lid from the center out and the lower lid from the corner of your eye outward. With a little practice, you can do this in less than a minute, and the difference it can make in your eyes is nothing short of incredible.

Slick on a quick coat of lip-gloss or lipstick and you are done.

Nighttime Glamour in Minutes

The easiest way to go from office to evening is to build on your daytime makeup. If you cannot do that, one-step makeup wipes are a godsend. Just swipe one over your cheeks, brow and chin to remove blusher, foundation and any dirt that may be present.

Apply moisturizer with your fingertips and smooth it over your cheeks and under your eyes.

Apply a powder foundation with a fluffy makeup brush. Pick a shimmery shade that gives your face a dewy glow under the party lights.

Using a makeup brush, apply a warm bronze or gold-toned blush to the apples of your cheeks.

The hottest eye look this season is smoky and smoldering. Get this look by smoothing a plum or purple shade of eye shadow just above the lashes with your fingertip. Keeping your eyes straight ahead and wide open pick up a bit of the same eye shadow and very lightly run the pad of your finger along the top of your lower eyelid.

Apply a layer of mascara base coat and then choose one of the new two-part mascaras that include a base coat and a shimmer coat.

While the first coat of mascara is drying, apply your lipstick. For nighttime, choose a bright tomato or cherry red to make your lips stand out.

Apply a second coat of mascara and let it dry – and you are ready to step out with a sophisticated makeup look!

Many women who enjoy wearing makeup do so for many reasons. Sometimes it is to cover up blemishes and imperfections of the skin. Sometimes it is just to highlight facial features to add a touch more beauty.
Â
However, the problem is that many types of makeup are really horrible and harsh to facial skin, actually causing damage with prolonged use. Unfortunately, a lot of women find a makeup that they like and they wouldn’t change it for the world – even if it is causing damage to their skin.

Thankfully, there is a form of makeup that every woman should try. It is called mineral makeup. There are several brands available, but one of the really great brands out there is called Jane Iredale.

What Makes Mineral Makeup Different From Other Types Of Makeup?

You probably hear this in every single makeup advertisement, but mineral makeup is truly unique. You will hardly believe the difference that mineral makeup makes to your skin.

First of all, mineral makeup is non-comedogenic. In terms of skin care products, it means that it will not block your pores. This is important because makeup which blocks the pores can cause skin blemishes when it gets trapped beneath the skin. Non-comedogenic makeup is great for acne-prone skin because it reduces the chances of getting acne.

Secondly, mineral makeup, such as the products available from Jane Iredale, is all natural and hypo-allergenic. That means even women who have super-sensitive skin can wear mineral makeup.

Third, mineral makeup gives complete coverage for all kinds of skin imperfections. Even women with rosacea can use mineral makeup and it will completely cover the redness and even out the skin tone.

Another reason that women should try mineral makeup is because it is long-lasting and rarely needs touch-ups throughout the day. This means that you can actually save money with mineral makeup because over time you will use less, and it will last much longer than other types of makeup.

Mineral Makeup Is Actually Good For Your Skin

While so many people forget to use sunscreen on a daily basis to protect the skin and prevent pre-mature aging, if you switch to mineral makeup, this will no longer be a problem. Mineral makeup has built in sun protection – up to an SPF 20. This means that your face is protected from harmful UVA and UVB rays.

Mineral makeup is so good for your skin, that it comes highly recommended by plastic surgeons and dermatologists worldwide. The mineral makeup forms a breathable barrier that actually protects the skin from environmental pollutants that can cause free radical damage.

Some professionals even say that mineral makeup is so good for your skin that you can actually sleep in it with no worries. If you haven’t already given mineral makeup a try, or if you are in the market for mineral makeup, it is definitely worth it to make the switch. Mineral makeup products, such as those available from Jane Iredale, are available from skincare professionals. Once you try mineral makeup, you will never want to use any other kind of makeup!

Not long ago, blue eye shadow was considered a bigger faux pas than a muffin top, reserved for vilified television characters and moms in need of makeovers. “We got so much of it from the ’60s to the ’80s that it just became comical,” says Estée Lauder Creative Makeup Director Tom Pecheux. But perhaps we should take a hint from those past perpetrators of excess: “Blue eye shadow is flattering on nearly everyone—every skin tone, eye color, hair shade,” Pecheux says. The hue has a rather magical ability to brighten bloodshot eyes, perk up sallow-looking skin, and neutralize undereye circles, thus performing an impressive age-rewinding hat trick.

The power of blue is no modern revelation. During his British invasion, Julius Caesar wrote about the bizarre, blue-stained Briton warriors, whose body paint was made from the unfortunately named herb woad. After the advent of synthetic dyes in the mid-nineteenth century, cosmetics companies began rolling out mass-produced shades of shadow (no more woad, thank you), and by the 1950s, eye shadows in myriad colors, including pigment-rich blues, were everywhere. Even some of the first Barbie dolls, introduced in 1959, wore a pop of blue eye shadow along with a black-and-white-striped maillot. In the ’60s, Andy Warhol produced prints of a bevy of beauties, including Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Kennedy, with exaggerated, acid blue lids. “In the ’70s, we’d take blue eye shadow and sweep it all the way up to the temples. We wanted the shape to be catlike,” says Lancôme makeup artist Sandy Linter. “It was a very wow look!”

So, why—and how—does a hue once more or less shunned make a comeback? “Blue is a very optimistic color, and I think that’s what everyone wants to feel right now,” Linter says. “You put it on, and it instantly changes your mood for the better.” The trend-forecasting firm Pantone Color Institute named a brilliant, blue-green turquoise 2010’s color of the year. And now Pecheux—who can make anything sexy (see the black lips on YSL’s fall 2008 runway)—is predicting blue’s renaissance. Those sapphire-smoked eyes at Derek Lam’s fall 2010 runway show were courtesy of Pecheux’s Blue Dahlia palette, part of his first color collection for Lauder.

Pulling off the look, however, requires some consideration—darker skin tones tend to look best with gold-flecked hues, such as aquamarine; paler complexions make a perfect canvas for cooler colors, such as cobalt and periwinkle. As for placement, anything goes—almost. At Balenciaga’s spring 2010 show, makeup artist Pat McGrath dabbed electric blue in the inner corners of models’ eyes for an alluringly futuristic effect. Another über-hip way to wear it: Ever-stylish actress Kate Bosworth brought her blue crush to life when she sported elongated teal streaks on her lids. Makeup artist Ashunta Sheriff, who keeps Alicia Keys’ eyes popping with a rainbow of shades, recommends that the color-shy start with a hint of liner to “experiment with different blues.” As for Pecheux, he prefers to concentrate the color in the center of the lid for a “flash of brightness” when you blink. “I love a surprise, don’t you?” Yes—but only the ones that make us look better.

With the start of summer finally here, it’s time to switch to a lighter moisturizer, pare down your daily makeup routine, and let your true beauty shine! One way to do this: Opt for monochromatic color as Maybelline global makeup artist Charlotte Willer did for Alexandre Herchcovitch’s spring 2010 show. “It’s a fresh, easy, five-minute look,” says the beauty guru. “Alexandre wanted the girls to have a healthy, youthful flush—nothing too crazy.”

To give models an understated yet flattering glow, Willer chose peachy-pink tones to illuminate the face, beginning with Maybelline Mineral Power Naturally Luminous Blush in True Peach. Dusting the lightweight powder along the upper eyelid and lower lash line, Willer created a “cloud of color” to make eyes pop. “Every eye color—brown, blue, green—is accentuated by peach or pink shadow,” she says. After coating lashes with black lengthening mascara, Willer applied Naturally Luminous Blush in Gently Pink to the cheeks, and dabbed lips with Maybelline Color Sensational Lipcolor in Born With It.
