If there's one type of haircut that's stood the test of time, it's layers: think of long and sexy a la Gisele, short and shagged for The Rachel, even soft and feathered after Farrah Fawcett. So when hairstylist Mark Townsend of the new Marie Robinson salon in New York City declared that he's over layers, we were intrigued.

"I'm not really into layers right now," said Townsend. "They can look a little '90s." Instead, he recommends that clients such as Ashley Olsen go light on layers, a technique that he says makes hair look fuller and healthier. "I even like it when the hair looks heavy at the bottom," he says.

To give hair fullness at home, Townsend favors hot rollers. (We do too—we wrote about them in our May issue!) He suggests wrapping just the bottom of your hair around the tool for subtle volume, and going all the way up to the scalp for more lift.
